Day #1 - The Journey to Hawaii - Dad

It feels helpless when you receive a notice that your second flight has been delayed 5 hours.  We had to still get up early and take our first flight to DC, leaving our house at 3:30 am only to know that we would be waiting in an airport for over 5 hours to catch our "real" flight to Hawaii, but you make the most out of the situation.

Our Rapid Rover arrived at 3:30 am ready to take us to the airport, we were told that with such an early flight and so many passengers that we would have the van to ourselves - not so true.  After picking us up, we went down the road in Medford Lakes to pick up an elderly couple.  Even though it was early in the morning, excitement was all around and we talked with them about their daughter who lives in Hawaii.  We learned about Shave Ice and were told to stop at the Surfin' Monkey to get some.

The first flight out of PHL was a small one.  I say it was small because the flight attendant made an announcement that the front of the plan was too heavy and asked for a volunteer to move to the back.  I realized that I would rather sleep in the back than crash in a seat next to my bride, so I moved - right next to the Webb's.  It is nice to be with friends on a flight, but it is even nicer to sleep.  Everyone slept for the quick 45 minute flight.

Then the waiting game began.  The line at Dunkin' Donuts was enormous and people did not want to wait in line.  However, I pointed out that we were waiting no matter what and you might as well wait in line.  People got breakfast, we moved to the terminal and then we chilled.  To get people off their devices, we decided to play some new games.  We played Exploding Kittens and We Did Not Play Test This Game.  We enjoyed hanging out and having a good time.  Such a good time that another passenger asked us what game it was because we looked like we were having so much fun.

Since the flight was delayed over 4 hours - free stuff.  Some snacks and drinks were put out and as soon as the vouchers were announced, I was the first one in line.  Pot Belly's was the chosen place for lunch.  Free lunch for 4 hours - not sure it was worth it, but it sure made me feel better.

The flight was long.  The adults had larger seats while the kids sat in the back.  Everyone used the TVs in the headseats and chose different movies to watch.  Some kids under the age of 17 even chose R rated movies - oooohhhhh.

We landed in Hawaii.  First up was a disagreement about the size of the car.  They wanted to give us a 7 seater for 8 people.  Luckily, the guy said to us early on that he did not want to argue with us and would just give us the larger car.  So off we went with room to spare in what is in essence the size of a mini-bus.

The hotel was nicer than most placed we stay.  Valet Parking, Service of a drink and cold towel upon arrival, and people willing to serve you.  As we wandered around looking for a place for dinner, we broke all rules and sat down somewhere bypassing the hostess station.  They pointed out that we were supposed to check in and we played the tourist card.  Early to bed that night, which meant 9:30 pm which was 3:30 am our time - 24 hours later.
