The day started with a guided tour of Haleakala (hol-lee-a-ka-la) which was very cold. I have been to 10,000 feet above sea level twice and both times it was freezing - coincidence? It is amazing when you actually go higher than the clouds. The driver, 28 days until retirement, flew up the winding road without a second thought. A little scary.
After the tour we were deposited at the base of the national park - 6,600 feet above sea level and told to bike the 23 miles to the shop. Now, to be fair, the ride would be 99% downhill, but the conditions were less than ideal - heavy rain, winding roads, small shoulders. Even then, the ride was amazing. I soon determined that I was going to be the slowest of all the bikers. Everyone took off, and I was left. Jake loves the ability to determine his own speed - really stinkin' fast. So I did not see him - or any of the kids who decided to keep up with him. Later in the ride I did catch up with Scott and Lara - ok, well they stopped, and I caught up.
Crazy, fast ride - the fastest I have every gone on a bike. It was unforgettable!
